Hair of the Dog Wines, 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley
Although Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in other regions of Sonoma County, Alexander Valley is renowned for producing exceptional Cabs. A recent article in Sonoma Magazine stated, “Cab is king in Alexander Valley,” and we have to agree. With the perfect microclimate, soil types and elevation, Alexander Valley is planted largely to Cabernet grapes and other Bordeaux varietals.

The proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides the natural air conditioning. Further inland than the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley’s summer days are a bit warmer and the cooling evening fog doesn’t always reach into this valley nor does it remain as long in the morning. Because of the different fog pattern, Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet thrive here. Along with the warmer days, this region also has rocky, less fertile soil. This means the vines are stressed during the growing season, producing more intensely flavored grapes. You can taste the intensity as you sip a Cabernet from Alexander Valley.
